AT&T Coverage Map & How to Improve Cell Phone Signal with Booster

Checkout AT&T coverage maps and find out how improving AT&T Wireless signal in your home, office, or vehicle has become simply easy with our cell phone signal booster suggestions.

2019 has shown that AT&T ranks as being the best network for 3G coverage, and third best for 4G LTE coverage for United States. When compared to other networks, the 4G coverage map of AT&T is only behind Verizon by 12% and T-Mobile by 1%.

However, these numbers should not mislead anyone at all. 58% of the coverage map for AT&T is still able to provide an amazing service for certain areas.

Many people have looked at a coverage map to show that the map was not accurate. The coverage map for AT&T can show general areas that have coverage, but it will not show any signal strength inside of buildings or dead spots.

Normally, if an area is shown to be covered by AT&T, but there may be an issue with in-vehicle or in-building coverage, then a cell phone signal booster may help to boost the signal and improve cellular service.

The coverage map for AT&T 4G LTE.

ATT 4G LTE Coverage Map

The 4G network for AT&T is able to cover most of the U.S., but it does not have service like Verizon and T-Mobile in certain areas, which may be seen on their coverage map. The AT&T 4G cellular network covers at least a part of each state within United States, while in some states, the gap within the network is quite large.

AT&T follows Verizon and T-Mobile when it comes to 4G coverage in United States. The network for 4G LTE is able to allow a customer to load large amounts of data, and have high quality calls as well as texts. Before the launch of 5G which is going to be available towards the end of this year, the truth was that 4G LTE was the best in terms of cellular connectivity.

A&T services are available in states such as Wyoming, Alaska, Nevada, Arizona, Nebraska and Maine, but their network covers 60% or less of the state. However, even within these areas that are covered by AT&T, may still have issues with connectivity due to mountain or valley areas, thick foliage, or even the building structures. In order for there to be an increase of service inside of these areas, there may be a need to purchase femtocells or signal amplifiers.

Coverage Map for AT&T 3G.

AT&T 3G Coverage Map

When comparing the coverage maps of AT&T with T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint, the best network is going to be the one that has the highest coverage on the map, will be the highest of network coverage which are 4G and 3G, as mentioned previously. However, 3G is able to support a lot of areas that do not have access to 4G as of yet.

AT&T provides the largest 3G coverage map among all major US carriers. The 3G cell signal allows us to make calls, send text messages and load small amounts of data. The benefit of 3G cellular signals is that they can travel longer distances, providing a wider coverage in rural areas. Compared with 4G LTE, the disadvantage of 3G is that it cannot load large amounts of data at high speed.

AT&T 5G Coverage Map.

ATT 5G Coverage Map

5G will become available for AT&T for fixed applications such as businesses and homes. This mobile service will be available for 19 cities to start with which include Las Vegas, Orlando, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Nashville, Atlanta, Louisville, Jacksonville, Houston, Charlotte, Dallas, San Antonio, Raleigh, Indianapolis, Oklahoma City, New Orleans and Waco.

AT&T said that improving 4G is a very important step for 5G, so that they have begun to carry out "5G evolution" rating for their 4G network. In testing, AT&T used the millimeter-wave spectrum of 28 GHz and 39 GHz. The 39 GHz spectrum is expected to be compatible with the first release of AT&T Mobile 5G in the first half of 2019. By the end of the year, the company's previous 28 GHz and low frequency bands for 3G will be used to provide 3G spectrum. Larger amplitude 5G coverage.

AT&T Network Carriers.

Other carriers may use the AT&T network and these are called MVNO or Mobile Virtual Network Operators. Below is a list of MNVOs for AT&T.

Carriers Using AT&T Network:

Carrier Name Networks Shared
Cricket Wireless AT&T
Consumer Cellular T-Mobile, AT&T
FreeUp Mobile AT&T
FreedomPop Sprint, AT&T
Net10 U.S Cellular, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T
H20 Wireless AT&T
Red Pocket T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, AT&T
Pix Wireless Sprint, AT&T
TracFone T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, AT&T
Straight Talk T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, AT&T

What are MVNOs?

MVNOs are cell businesses that do not have an infrastructure, such as cell towers. What they do is purchase wholesale minutes, text and data from a carrier that own and can maintain cell towers.

Cellular customers may find a better deal with an MVNO, but roaming may be a problem.

Often times major carriers will have a roaming agreement with other carriers, and this means that when AT&T does not have coverage within a specific area, the customer may use another network such as Sprint or T-Mobile within that area. This means they may even offer better service range than the top carriers that own their own network.

However, it is these agreements between the carriers that are not shared to the MVNOs and that means that if someone leaves a Cricket Wireless area that is covered by AT&T, there will be no coverage.

The Calculation of the AT&T Coverage Map.

The coverage map, no matter what cellphone company it is, will be calculated based on the location of the cell towers and the range or power of that tower.

Many coverage maps will not have the data that will be needed in order to consider all obstacles such as buildings, valleys, mountains or trees which may keep the signal from reaching a location that it should be reaching.

Basically, the coverage map is more of a broad picture. During the next section, there will be steps on how anyone can check the AT&T coverage within their area.

Best Ways to Check Cell Coverage for AT&T.

A coverage map is a great way to see if a certain cell phone carrier is able to provide service for a generalized area.

Many companies have spoken with cell phone customers starting out within the early 2000s, and there are much better ways for a person to be able to see the cell coverage for AT&T on the coverage map.

First of all, checkout AT&T Website for the coverage area map by typing in your home address, work address, or any address where you usually travel and would need coverage. If you find the coverage exists per the map but you don't actually get coverage in any one or more of those required areas, try following methods to pinpoint coverage situation.

Good: Look at a cell tower map and locate any AT&T cell towers that are near areas that the cell phone will be used. This helps to provide people with a much better idea of what the cell-phone service will be like.

Better: Look up real customer reviews for AT&T network coverage using 3rd party neutral websites or reach out to the local community such as neighbors to see what the experience for coverage is like within the area. It is best to use Facebook Groups for that area, or just ask the local area expert online.

Best: Test the cell signal by using an app on the phone to test what the cell signal is like within the area. OpenSignal is an Android app that can provide a great signal reading or enter into the field test mode. However, these may not work for iPhone or Apple devices that have iOS 11 or newer.

Best Tools to find Cell Towers for AT&T.

Using these websites can help to provide anyone with an idea about the coverage map of AT&T by looking at the cell towers as well antenna locations, and even get reviews from other AT&T customers by using these tools for free.

Good: CellReception can provide customer reviews and it is a great way to see what the wireless phone issues are for an area. Based on personal experience, there are some places that have a single 1-star review, but have great service within other areas. With that being said, it is best to test the signal whenever in that area.

Better: Cell Mapper provides data that could be a bit hard to understand especially if a person is not that technical. The map is able to show the exact location of a cell tower close to a location, what direction it faces, what bands are supported and a lot more.

Best: Antenna Search provides great data but the website can be hard to go through. Searching by the address is able to show any towers that are near to that area and it allows data to be shown clearly about each cell company or companies are operating on each tower.

It should be remembered that most towers are going to have limitations based on user capacity and range, which can vary based on the tower. For instance, there are some towers for AT&T which will only cover 20 miles and support 1,000 calls at once where there are others that will cover 20 miles and only 500 calls. There are some towers that will not work with 4G LTE signals and may only use 3G.

How to Extend Coverage for AT&T?

Whether a person is within the coverage map for AT&T, or outside of the network, one of the solutions that is listed below may be able to help improve cell service for AT&T customers inside of a vehicles or home / office.

Good Option: AT&T MicroCell.

The microsell, which may be called a femtocell is a type of mini cell tower that can be used within the office or home. AT&T Home Network Extender or MicroCell will need a strong broadband Internet connection with a connection of minimum 256 Kbps upstream and 1.5 Mbps downstream, which will be used to create a cell signal for data, texting and calling.

Benefits of the Microcell:

  • Great for AT&T service for cell data, text and calling in small areas.
  • The purchase cost can be discounted based on case by case basis.
  • Can create a cell signal even when no service outside.

Disadvantages of the Microcell:

  • Monthly cost.
  • Covers only 1 or 2 rooms.
  • Only works with AT&T and will not work with other carriers.
  • Only supports 4 callers or data users.
  • Only extends AT&T 3G network coverage.

Update: AT&T Microcell may no longer be available.

  • I want to know what AT&T’s coverage map looks like today compared to this 2019 map. I’m sure it’s improved. I at least hope it’s improved in areas like Alaska and Nebraska. I’m sure Alaska’s huge size and smaller population doesn’t make it cost effective to put up many cell phone towers, but what’s up with Nebraska? There must be many people using cell phone boosters in those states if they’re still that spotty in coverage.

  • I have a new phone and it just so happens that I have AT&T. Good to see they have wide coverage. Some of the other carriers have hit-and-miss coverage but AT&T looks like the strongest. My phone has been working well so far and I wonder how much has to do with it being a new phone and how much it has from AT&T…

  • AT&T looks to have improved their coverage since I had them. I had an AT&T plan about 10 years ago and it was average. My biggest complaint was their mediocre customer service (don’t know how it is now). Either way, their coverage looks solid and like the article states, if you have problems, there’s the option of a cell phone booster. I might look at AT&T as I’m thinking of getting a new phone and might switch carriers depending on rates.

  • I understand when people get frustrated with add-on’s but there are many add-on’s to technology that simply make things better whether it’s Roku’s for TV, additives for dishwashers, or cell phone boosters. From what I know, not everyone needs them, but when they do (such as living in remote areas far away from cell towers), they can really come in handy. If you don’t want them, don’t buy them.

    Larry Tompkins on
  • I gotta say B.S. on this. Why would you even waste your money getting a signal booster unless you live in the handful of states with limited coverage (Montana, Nevada, etc.) In those cases, maybe check and find a carrier that has better penetration. I’m so tired of people trying to sell add-on’s for every product whether it’s extended warranties or cell phone boosters.
