In a report on August 5, 2015 it was reported by CNN Money that there had been a massive outage of cellular phone usage in Kentucky. What made this event so unique is that three of the major networks for that state went down simultaneously, raising questions as to why the event occurred. Upon investigation, it was shown that a cable from one of the carriers had been cut resulting in the other networks which “piggy-backed” off of the downed network to fail as well. Given the terrain of the state, it is not surprising that such a joining of networks would have occurred.

When looking at Kentucky’s terrain, one will see that it has a number of different communicative barriers. First, the state has Coalfields with various levels of bedrock ranging from the Eastern Pennyroyal region to the Outer Bluegrass region. The hard bedrock makes it difficult for nested wires to be run along a great majority of the state. Secondly, the state has such diversity in elevations that establishing consistent communications and internet is somewhat problematic. For example around Louisville, the elevations fluctuate from 1500 feet above sea level to lower than 500 feet in some areas. This is quite a tremendous difference. The third point is that the state is mainly rural in its population. As a result, network companies have spanned out the towers and the cables so that the urban areas (like Lexington, Louisville, and Owensboro) have the best reception and more towers while the rural areas get limited access to such.
